Garage Shop Space Update

When you have a week by yourself and the kids are gone at school and daycare all day, I didn’t give a second thought to updating the shop space in the garage. Before, the space was very unorganized and inefficient. The space made it no fun to work in and I was left uninspired with the space.

The shelf along the back wall of the garage was clunky and difficult to use effectively.

I knew I wanted to be able to have upper cabinets to put things away that I didn’t want covered in saw dust or out of site because they don’t get used often. However, I also wanted the cabinets to have and open space for easy access storage of some items.

I opted to make two cabinets that mirror each other. Something unique about my space is that all of the exterior walls are actually studded at 24 inches on center which created a unique challenge. Each cabinet is, in total, 28 inches wide, 24 inches tall, and 12 inches deep. I added the space between the cabinets to put my f-style and squeeze clamps for ease of access. Each cabinet was build out of 3/4 inch plywood and has 2 internal shelves.

Next up, I wanted to add a workbench. What I want to use the bench for is not entirely known as I thought of it, but as it was coming together, it made sense to me that this bench would be used primarily for tool set-up, project piece staging, and cut layouts. Underneath the bench top is a shelf for additional storage of items that do not get used often and are kept in storage bins. I was able to utilize most of the 2x4s that were used in the original back wall shelf as the structure for the new bench. 2 lays of 3/4 inch plywood was used as the bench top which makes it very sturdy and able to take a beating!

With the leftover plywood, I decided to put it on the wall to make better use of the that space for tool storage and organization. With it, I am able to put my commonly used layout tools wherever I want them for easy access and organization.

There is plenty of space for more tools as the collection grows!

Lastly, it was time to purge a lot of the scraps of plywood and 2x4 material that I just have no use for anymore. This was quite satisfying as it cleaned up the floor space to make is less cluttered. At last, the week came to a close and the space was completed, for now. With increased efficiency and work flow as well as less clutter and better organization, I am excited to get to work in this updated space!
